Standard tables of number fields, elliptic curves, class numbers and factorisations, and how to use them responsibly.

Extensive tables exist for number fields, elliptic curves, class numbers and factorisations. They save enormous effort and are the single best source of test material.

Using tables responsibly

Key point

Tables are the best available test material because they supply verified answers across a wide range of inputs, including the awkward cases that random testing rarely produces. Every implementation in this collection should be checked against them.

Pitfall

Conventions vary between tables. Form equivalence, the sign of the discriminant, the choice of class group generators and the curve model all differ between sources. A disagreement is more often a convention mismatch than an error, and confirming the convention is the first diagnostic step.

Completeness claims

A table claiming to list all objects below a bound rests on a completeness argument, which is separate from the correctness of the individual entries.

Caution

Individual entries being correct does not make a list complete. The completeness argument depends on search bounds — see constructing tables — and should be checked before relying on absence from a table as evidence.

Conditional entries

Note

Many tabulated class groups and regulators are conditional on GRH, and many elliptic curve ranks are conditional on Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer or on the finiteness of an obstruction group. Good tables flag this; the flag should be carried through into any result that depends on the entry.

  3. Carry conditionalityA result depending on a conditional entry is itself conditional.
  4. Report discrepanciesA genuine disagreement is worth investigating and reporting.
