Components of a Research Proposal
A checklist of items and the order in which they usually appear — that is how the supplied source presents its component table, with a warning that your supervisor may add parts or leave them out. This page works through every row and what each one actually asks you to decide.
How the source frames the list
Three things in that instruction change how the table should be used. It says likely to contain most — a probability, not a requirement. It gives your supervisor authority to add or remove parts. And it claims value for the sequence itself, not only the contents.

What each component actually asks for
Front matter: the cover page and the table of contents
Component 1 asks the title to do four things at once: be descriptive of focus, be concise, be eye-catching, and preferably use keywords from international information retrieval systems. The last of those is a genuinely practical instruction and the one most often ignored.
A title built from retrieval keywords is one other researchers will find when they search the way you searched. Borrow the vocabulary of the databases you used to build your own literature list, not your organisation's internal phrasing. Internal jargon makes work unfindable.
Component 2 contains the only hard formatting rule in the table: a decimal numbering hierarchy, and "don't use more than four digits". Four levels — 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1 — is the depth limit. A section numbered to five levels is a signal that the argument has been organised as a filing system rather than a line of reasoning.
The case for the study: background, rationale, purpose and aims
Components 3, 4 and 5 are the persuasive core of the document, and the source's parentheses are instructions in disguise. Component 3 says background is preferably given a more descriptive name; component 4 says the rationale is usually combined with background. Read together: one section, named for its actual content, that establishes the context and makes the case.
What each of the three has to accomplish
Background, under a better name
Provides context — historical, cultural, political, social or organisational — plus a theoretical starting point, personal motivation and policy where relevant. The phrase to notice is that it "may problematise the current status quo": background is not neutral scene-setting, it is where the situation is made to look like a problem.
Need for the study
Persuades the reader the study is needed, useful and interesting. Three grounds are offered: a gap in the literature, the need to apply existing ideas in a new context, or the significance of the topic. It also asks for the ways the study may be significant for the wider community — beyond your own organisation.
Purpose and aims
States the purpose clearly and succinctly, in the broader context, and outlines the key research questions and aims. Two constraints attach: the questions are "usually What, How, Why, or What if", and they "should be few, so that the focus is manageable".
The three grounds in component 4 differ in strength, and the second — applying existing ideas in a new context — is the one practitioners reach for most readily and defend least well. Making it hold up is the subject of Writing the Problem Statement.
The constraint on component 5 is worth reading twice. The source does not say how few questions is few. It says only that the number must keep the focus manageable, which puts the test on the focus rather than on the count. A literature review that is deliberately not extensive
Component 6 carries an explicit limit — "this is not expected to be extensive for the proposal" — and then a demanding list of what the non-extensive version must still achieve. It has to survey the main theorists, rest on a library search, demonstrate critical analysis, be shaped by your argument, establish your theoretical orientation, and situate your research in the field.

Research design, and the one place you are told to write down your theory of knowledge
That first requirement deserves flagging, because it is unique. Component 7 is the only place in the entire supplied teaching dataset where a student is instructed to write down their understanding of the nature of knowledge. Everywhere else the material discusses that understanding as a concept to be recognised; here alone it becomes something you have to put on paper and defend.
The understanding in question has a name — it is your epistemological position, and it sits underneath every method you will choose. The concept and its consequences are set out at Epistemology: How Knowledge Is Created; this component is where the abstraction acquires a deadline.
The clause that follows — "and how this affects your choice of research approach" — is what makes the requirement more than a formality. You are asked to show the link running from your view of knowledge to the method you selected, not merely to declare a position.

Two of those six lead somewhere else in this library. The ethical procedures are what your ethics application will be built from. Plan, structure, prediction and back matter
Components 8, 9 and 10 are the forward-looking group, and each has a different status. The timetable is a plan, the thesis structure is a proposal about a document that does not exist yet, and the significance section is explicitly labelled a prediction.

Component 10's escape clause is the most interesting sentence in the table. A whole section can disappear if an earlier one did its job — meaning components 4 and 10 are two attempts at the same argument, and a proposal needing both usually has a rationale that did not land. Back matter: glossary, appendices and references
The last three components are the ones most often left to the final hour, and two carry instructions that are easy to miss.

- Lists specialised terms and their meanings — terms from another culture, acronyms, and key concepts in a relatively new field. The source adds a placement instruction rather than a location: put it where it is easy to locate.
- Appendices
- Documents relevant to the main text whose presence in the body would disturb the flow. The source names pilot study material, interview questions, survey instruments and the explanatory statement to participants.
- References
- Works consulted so far that appear useful. The tense is deliberate — this is a reference list at a point in time, not a completed bibliography. The slide version adds that you should use the referencing conventions recommended by your supervisor.
The appendices list is more revealing than it appears. Interview questions, survey instruments and the participant explanatory statement are all documents an ethics committee will want to see. Empty appendices mean the instruments do not exist yet, and the ethics application will start from nothing.
A second, shorter outline — nine elements from a different institution
Two lists from two institutions sit in the same teaching material and they do not match. Neither is presented as the correct one, and the material never reconciles them. Mapping one onto the other is instructive precisely because the mapping is imperfect.

The theoretical framework requirement that sits behind both lists
This passage appears as a numbered component in neither list, and it is the only place in the supplied material where a student is told the paradigm should be clear. Set beside component 7, it makes the philosophical layer of the proposal explicit rather than implied.

When a component does not fit your study
What to carry forward
- The table is a checklist and an order, not a mandatory structure. Your supervisor may require parts added or omitted, and you are told to check first.
- It has thirteen rows and the prose calls it twelve. Ask which count is meant if someone quotes the number at you.
- Component 7 is the only place in the supplied dataset where you are told to write down your understanding of the nature of knowledge — and to show how it shaped your method.
- Component 7 also carries the ethical procedures and the delimitations statement, so it is the row an ethics application is built from.

Do I have to include all thirteen components?

Why does the source call it a twelve-item table when there are thirteen rows?
