The rows describing what exists first, what the study produces and where design risk sits are readings of the two definitions, not additional source statements.

Notice what the definitions do not say. Neither is tied to a data type, neither is tied to a methodology, and neither is described as more rigorous. The distinction is purely about sequence: whether the proposition precedes the data or emerges from it.

The direction of travel

The clearest way to hold the difference is to trace what moves, and in which order. In one direction the evidence comes first and the explanation is built on top of it. In the other the explanation comes first and the evidence is gathered to see whether it survives.

Inductive: data first

  • You start with a phenomenon you cannot yet explain and a question about what is going on.
  • You gather material rich enough to be examined rather than merely counted.
  • Patterns are identified in the material during examination.
  • A hypothesis, explanation or proposition is generated from those patterns.
  • The proposition is the output of the study, and it is offered, not proven.

Deductive: proposition first

  • You start with a proposition that already exists, usually drawn from the literature.
  • You state it before collection, in a form that could turn out to be wrong.
  • You design an instrument capable of producing evidence about that specific proposition.
  • You collect, and the data either is or is not consistent with what was proposed.
  • The verdict is the output of the study, and the proposition itself was the input.

The asymmetry worth internalising is this: an inductive study cannot fail to produce a proposition, but a deductive study can very easily produce a null result. That is not a defect. One of the seventeen designs in the exemplar volume reports that the programme under study was not successfully implemented within the research timeframe, and reports on why — a finding that only exists because something specific was expected in advance.

How each direction connects to the rest of the source's vocabulary

These two terms do not stand alone in the material. Each sits inside a cluster of vocabulary that points the same way — the study-purpose terms in descriptive, explanatory and evaluative research among them — and recognising the cluster tells you a great deal about a study you are reading or a design you are drafting.

The positivist and post-positivist rows are the most useful pair to hold on to, because they show that the verdict is not a single thing. One version leads to scientific laws when successful; the other establishes only probable facts or laws. The distinction is developed in positivism and post-positivism, and it directly limits the wording available to you in a conclusion.

What each direction asks of your design

Source gap

The source defines the terms and stops there

The supplied material gives one line and a list of associated terms for each direction. It provides no guidance on how to formulate a testable hypothesis, no guidance on how many cases are enough to support a generated proposition, no sampling rules, and no statistical or coding procedure for either direction.

The associated terms hypothetical-deductive and confirmatory are listed without definitions of their own. So is the term exploratory, beyond its one-line gloss elsewhere in the material.

Everything procedural you do in either direction must therefore be sourced from a research methods text and cited as such. Do not present it as following from this teaching material.

With that limitation stated, the definitions still constrain a design in ways worth making explicit before you commit.

Choosing the direction from where you actually are

ThenYou are working inductively whether you intended to or not. Design for richness and be honest that the output is a proposition, not a verdict.

ThenThe framework is a prior structure applied to new data. Say which parts you are testing and which parts you are simply using to organise collection.

Caution

The retrofit problem

The most common failure with these two terms is not choosing wrongly. It is choosing inductively, analysing the data, noticing something interesting, and then writing the report as though that had been the hypothesis all along.

That borrows the authority of a tested proposition for work that generated one. The supplied source does not name this failure — but its own definitions rule it out, because a prior hypothesis is by definition prior. If the proposition came out of the data, present it as an output and let the next study test it.

Reading direction in published designs

The exemplar volume of master's project management research is a useful training set, because the abstracts describe designs in enough detail to see the direction without labelling it.

Designs paraphrased from published abstracts. Participant numbers are what those abstracts report and are not benchmarks for sample size.

A fourth design in the same volume is instructive because it resists the binary. It explores existing project management maturity models, selects one, surveys employees using it, establishes a baseline, benchmarks against comparable organisations and identifies gaps. A prior framework is applied — which looks deductive — but nothing is tested; the framework structures the collection and the findings are descriptive. Both directions are covered in the wider survey of seventeen worked research designs.

How the claim changes with direction

This is where the choice becomes consequential. The source's account of drawing conclusions, set out in conducting the research and theorising the data, is the same for both directions — but the sentence you can write at the end is not.

The source on theorising your data

“When you analyse the data gathered, you begin the process of theorising your data. You do this by establishing where and how your data supports, and/or contradicts, the theory in the literature review… The analysed data is theorised. The findings of the research are knitted into the body of knowledge. What results is new theory or an extension of existing theory. This is the new knowledge created by the research project.”

The phrase new theory or an extension of existing theory covers both outputs. Reading the pair against the two directions — new theory as the characteristic product of inductive work, extension as the characteristic product of deductive work — is a reasonable alignment, but the source does not draw it and you should not attribute it.

  • From inductive work, the defensible claim is that examination of this data generated this proposition, and that the proposition now warrants testing. Generalisation is not available to you on the strength of this source, which attaches generalisation only to quantitative results.
  • From deductive work, the defensible claim is either that the data supports the proposition, or that it contradicts it — and the strength of the wording depends on the position you have adopted, since the source distinguishes scientific laws from probable facts or laws.
  • From either, the claim must be stated against the theory in the literature review. The source is explicit that theorising means establishing where the data supports and where it contradicts what the literature holds.

There is a discipline hidden in that last point. Your conclusion has to engage the literature you reviewed, which means the propositions you test or generate must be in the same terms as the propositions the literature already contains. That is a reason to settle direction while you are still reading, not afterwards — see Step 4: deciding your research question.

Checks before you commit

Direction is cheap to change while your question is still a draft and expensive to change after your instrument is in the field. Run this before collection opens.

Direction check

  • You can say, in one sentence, whether your proposition exists now or is expected to emerge from the data.
  • If it exists now, it is written down, dated and specific enough that the data could contradict it.
  • If it does not exist now, your design produces material rich enough for a proposition to be built from, not just counts.
  • You know which of your findings will be offered and which will be asserted, and the difference is visible in the wording.
  • Your propositions are expressed in the same terms as the literature you reviewed, so the conclusion can engage it.
  • You have a cited procedure for the analysis, since the supplied source provides none for either direction.
  • If you are running both directions, you have written down which phase comes first and what each phase is allowed to conclude.
Check before you proceed

One question to ask before you build the instrument

What result would make me change my mind? If you are working deductively and cannot answer, your proposition is not testable. If you are working inductively and find yourself answering easily, you may have a prior hypothesis you have not admitted to — and you should either state it and test it properly, or set it aside deliberately.

What to carry forward

  1. Inductive work generates hypotheses, explanations or propositions from examination of the data. Deductive work collects data to test a proposition that already exists.
  2. The distinction is order of operations, not data type, methodology or rigour.
  3. The source associates inductive work with exploratory research and deductive work with hypothetical-deductive and confirmatory research, but defines none of those associated terms further.
  4. No procedure is supplied for either direction. Sample sizes, coding methods and statistical tests all come from outside this material and need citing.
  5. The claim you may make at the end follows from the direction: a proposition offered, or a verdict delivered at the strength your philosophical position allows.
  6. Never present a proposition generated from your data as though it had been tested. State direction before collection and hold to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the supplied source say which direction I should use?

No. It defines both in a terminology table with associated terms and offers no preference and no selection rule. The nearest guidance elsewhere in the material is the general instruction that the methods you choose depend on the questions you want to answer, which points you back to the wording of your research question.

Is inductive research the same as qualitative research?

The source does not equate them. Inductive is defined by where the proposition comes from, and qualitative by the medium of the data — words rather than numbers. The two often travel together in practice, but you can examine numerical data inductively and you can gather word data to test a stated proposition.

What does hypothetical-deductive mean in the source?

It is listed as an associated term for deductive research and is never defined. The same is true of confirmatory. If you use either term in a proposal, define it from a research methods text you cite rather than relying on this teaching material.

Can one project use both directions?

Nothing in the source rules it out, and it advises that practical research usually needs several types of method. The safe approach is to sequence the phases explicitly and state what each phase is entitled to conclude, so that an exploratory phase is not later reported as though it had tested something.

What if my deductive study finds nothing?

A null result is a result, and the source's own account of theorising covers data that contradicts the theory in the literature as well as data that supports it. The exemplar volume includes a chapter reporting that the programme studied was not successfully implemented in the research timeframe, and reports on why. Design your reporting so that a contradiction is publishable rather than embarrassing.
