Step 2: Reviewing and Testing Your Research Topic

Step two is where an idea you like becomes a topic you can defend. Two sets of questions do the testing — one aimed outward at the research, one aimed squarely at you — and only one of them is comfortable to answer honestly.

What this step is actually testing

What am I most interested in?

What should I include and, more importantly, exclude?

What are the relevant questions I can ask? What is my particular focus?

Note the phrasing — the questions you can ask, not the questions that exist. This is where access, position and confidentiality quietly determine what is available to you.

TIME

What is my timeframe?

Asked last and answered first in practice, because it constrains everything above it. A fixed submission date is a hard boundary on scope, method and sample.

Caution

The slog is a real risk, not a figure of speech

A research project run alongside a delivery role is sustained by interest more than by discipline. The source names this directly, and it is the reason the motivation question comes first in its list rather than last.

The related failure is choosing a topic because it is convenient — the data is already sitting in a system you can reach. Convenience is a legitimate tiebreaker between two topics you care about. It is a poor primary reason.

Answers that settle a topic, and answers that do not

  • You can say why the question is worth asking without referring to your own interest
  • Your reading, not your impression, tells you it has not already been answered
  • You can name whose interest the question serves, including your own
  • The method follows from the question, and you can run it in the time you have
  • You can state what you are excluding, in writing

Go back a step when

  • The justification is circular — it matters because it is important
  • You are relying on a hunch that nobody has looked at this
  • The only beneficiary you can name is the organisation paying you
  • You picked the method before the question and are now reverse-engineering
  • Every attempt to write the exclusions makes the topic smaller than it can bear
  • The honest answer to the interest question is that you are indifferent

Brainstorm, cluster, title

Having tested the topic, the source gives a short sequence for turning it into something with edges. It opens with brainstorming and suggests using one of the many mind maps available on the website — a resource that is referenced by the material but is not part of the supplied dataset.

Check before you proceed

Before you tell anyone the topic is settled

Read your working title, then read your list of exclusions. If somebody could read the title and reasonably expect the study to cover something on the exclusion list, the title is not yet showing its boundaries — and the boundary, not the title, is what you will be defending later.

Name the parties who benefit from an answer, including yourself and your employer. Should I write the title now or at the end?
