The Four Sections of a Research Proposal
The section model is the most usable outline in the supplied material, and it arrives with a claim about itself that does not quite hold. Test the claim and the model still works — it just tells you something the source does not.
The section model, as the notes state it

The claim that the sections "accord with the key questions"
Having listed the sections, the notes state that they "accord with the key questions introduced above" — the four questions a reviewer asks, set out on What a Research Proposal Must Answer. Four sections, four questions, said to correspond. It is worth doing the correspondence explicitly, because it holds for three of the four and breaks in an instructive way on the fourth.

What to do about the residual section
The practical response is not to renumber the model but to stop treating the fourth section as back matter. The source does not prescribe this; in practice, the difference between a proposal that answers question four and one that gestures at it is how that section is written.

The overlap the source builds in and does not explain
There is a second structural feature worth knowing before you draft. The introduction is required to include "a summary of the gap in the literature and the research design" — both of which are then presented in full by the two sections that follow it. The source does not describe this as a deliberate overview-then-detail structure, and gives no guidance on how much detail belongs in each place.
Reading the two overlaps as an overview-then-detail structure is the most workable interpretation, and it is an interpretation, not the source's instruction. On that reading the introduction states conclusions and the later sections earn them: the introduction says what the gap is, the literature review demonstrates that it exists; the introduction says what you will do, the methods section shows why that design answers the question. Three structures, one week, no reconciliation
The four-section model is not the only structure the material gives. The same week supplies three, in three places, and does not mention that they differ. All three are set out below, because a reader who has seen only one of them will be surprised by the others.

The third structure has five sub-items under the first heading and six under the second; three are named — a timetable or project plan, ethical considerations, and a trial table of contents of 1 or 2 pages. The rest are not recoverable from the supplied material and are not reconstructed here.
The three are not contradictory so much as pitched at different levels. The slides describe an argument; the notes describe a document; the guidelines paragraph describes a submission with deliverables attached. A reader can hold all three at once — the argument the slides name has to be carried by the sections the notes name, and the guidelines paragraph adds the artefacts that have to accompany them.
What the slides add: a document that is not binding
This is consistent with the earlier proposal material and it changes what the section model is for. The sections are not a compliance schedule; they are the shape in which a discussion gets held — which is why an outline with a visible weakness is more useful now than a polished one that conceals it. Which structure to build on
Checking the assembled document
The check below tests the structure rather than the writing: whether each section carries its own load, and whether the two overlaps work as overview and detail rather than duplication.
Six checks on a sectioned draft
- The introduction names the problem, the field, the gap and the design — all four, in summary form, before any of them is argued.
- The literature review ends on the contribution. If the last paragraph is a summary of other people's work, the section has not done the thing the source defines it by.
- The methods section contains at least one sentence connecting the design to the question or aims. Description without that sentence is not an answer to question three.
- The two accounts of the gap — introduction and end of literature review — say the same thing at different lengths. If they differ, one is out of date.
- The two accounts of the design — introduction and methods section — are consistent, and the introduction's version can be read on its own.
- The fourth section contains a timeline that a sceptical reader could interrogate: dependencies, approval lead times, and the assumptions the end date rests on.
What to carry forward

Frequently asked questions
Which of the three structures should I actually use?
If a department or supervisor has specified one, use that — the slides make departmental requirements the governing consideration. Otherwise the four-section model from the study notes is the most complete, because it states contents for every section rather than naming headings. The slides' three-part shape is better used as a test of the idea than as a document outline.
Should the timeline really go at the back with the references?
That is where the section model puts it, and the model is what the source supplies. The practical point is that the placement understates its importance: the source separately says reviewers want reassurance about resources and completion, so the timeline is answering two of the three reassurances from a section described as additional information. Put it where the model says, and write it as though it were the third section.
How much of the research design belongs in the introduction if it also has its own section?
The source does not say, and that is a genuine gap rather than an omission on this page. The introduction is required to include a summary of the research design and the methods section presents it in full, with no guidance on the split. The workable reading is that the introduction states the design and the methods section justifies it, but that reading is this library's, not the source's.
Is the proposal binding once it is approved?
The slides say plainly that the initial document "isn't binding" and describe it as a starting point for discussion with a supervisor or unit coordinator to firm up topic, methodology and mechanics. That is consistent with the earlier proposal material. It does not licence vagueness — a proposal that leaves decisions open is not flexible, it is unfinished.
Where do ethics go — the methods section or the plan?
Both, doing different jobs. The methods and methodology section is where the source puts ethical considerations arising from the design, and the guidelines paragraph names ethical considerations again among its methodology sub-items. The timeline is where approval appears as a dated dependency. If the two are inconsistent, the schedule is usually the one that is wrong.
Does the proposal need a table of contents?
One of the three structures asks for a trial table of contents of one or two pages, and that is the only place in the supplied material where a proposed contents page is required at all. The length figure is that guideline's own and not a general standard. It is worth producing regardless, because it forces a commitment on how many chapters there will be and what goes in each.
